The man in Sagaing Region who was tortured and burnt to death for an alleged child theft was mentally ill, according to police sources.
Now, five suspects have been arrested for questioning.
A strange-looking man, assumed to have stolen a child in Minte Village, Chaung-U Township, Sagaing Region, was beaten by a group of angry people on the night of September 10. Then the group set fire to the man and threw the body off at the village cemetery, said an officer from Chaung-U Police Station.
"The slain man was from Chedawya Village in Myinmu Township. He used to run away from home very frequently. His family came to show us his medical records from Mandalay Mental Hospital. The body has taken by them. Now, we have arrested five suspects and are questioning them," Police Inspector Ye Myint.
His wife and relatives came to the police station on September 12 and confirmed that the man, aged 42, was mentally ill.
