Ministry of Health and Sports has sufficiently distributed medicines to the people’s hospitals nationwide. Due to an excess supply of medicines, even some hospitals have expired medicines, said Dr Myint Htwe, Union Minister for Heath and Sports at a peace talk between Myanmar State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and locals in Myaungmya Township On April 10.
In reply to the question raised by a local, the minister replied that the government had allotted the huge budget for the Ministry of Health and Sports. The ministry had to spend around Ks 370 billion a year. Almost all medicines were available at laboratories free of charge apart from some medicines for cancer. We collected money from patients for MRI and CT Scan only. This year, there was a budget surplus,” he added.
With regard to the supply of medicines, the State Counsellor said the region and state chief ministers need to recheck whether or not hospitals are using these medicines distributed by the ministry effectively.
Critics are saying that the ministry’s reply is untrue. Patients have to buy some medicines and conduct tests even at outside laboratories.
Ko Wai Lin Aung from the philanthropic youth association from Myaungmya said: “Cheap medicines which are easily available at outside drugstores, are sufficient. People have to buy most of medicines at outside shops.”
