The government's Peace Commission and Karenni National Progressive Party (KNPP) held an informal meeting for the first time at National Reconciliation and Peace Centre in Yangon on March 7 so that the latter could sign the nationwide ceasefire agreement (NCA).
The delegation of the Peace Commission comprised Chairman Dr Tin Myo Win, Vice Chairman Thein Zaw, Secretary Khin Zaw Oo and officials. The KNPP delegation was led by Vice Chairman Khu Oo Reh.
According to a statement released by KNPP after the meeting, both sides discussed matters related to already signed bilateral agreements, the joint monitoring committee, reappointment of government liaison officers at union and state levels and military affairs and continued talks on regional development.
The discussion also included KNPP's continued participation in the country's peace process after it has signed the NCA.
"The government side mainly listened to what we told. There was nothing special they discussed. The discussion was based on what our side had said," Khu Oo Reh.
He said that no agreement was reached as it was an informal meeting.
The statement also said that an official meeting between the government's Peace Commission and KNPP's Peace Committee is due to take place soon in Kayah State (Karenni State).
