Myanmar’s fourth telecom operator MyTel launched its services yesterday during a ceremony at the Kempinski Hotel in Naypyidaw.
MyTel is a joint venture including a consortium of 11 private Myanmar firms and Viettel, which is owned by the Vietnamese defense ministry.
“Thanks to the better telecommunications system for giving services to both home and abroad on time, the socioeconomic status of the people will improve rapidly,” said Myanmar commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing, who presided over the ceremony.
“Improving telecommunication system can be utilized for the improvement of the people’s lives,” he said.
He also said the availability of communications services through various telecom firms was part of the government’s efforts to promote transparency as it carries out tasks related to political reform and development.
MyTel received its telecommunications license from the Myanmar government last month and employs around 2,000 people in branch offices across Myanmar.
The operator has said it will provide only 4G broadband service.
Before the launch of MyTel, Myanmar’s telecom market has been dominated by MTP, which holds a 42 percent market share, followed by Telenor with 35 percent, and Ooredoo with 23 percent.
