Myanmar’s special court yesterday brought charges against those accused of involvement in the assassination of lawyer Ko Ni.
The court charged Kyi Lin under Sections 302 (1) (b)/34 and 302 (2) of the Penal Code, Aung Win Zaw under Section 302 (1) (b)/34, Zeyar Phyo under Section 302 (1) (b)/34 and Aung Win Tun under Sections 212 and 19 (d) (f).
The accused denied all charges against them. The defendants’ lawyers submitted an application to the judge to summon witnesses. Suspected ringleader Aung Win Khaing is still at large.
Plaintiff lawyer Khin Maung Htay said: “The jury said that it is sufficient to charge Aung Win Khaing under Section 302 (1) (b). A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Aung Win Khaing.” The suspect is now a declared fugitive, he added.
The court hearing kicked off in March, 2017.
Ko Ni was allegedly shot by Kyi Lin at close range at Yangon International Airport on January 29 when he arrived with a delegation from Indonesia.
The victim died on the spot. Taxi driver, Nay Win, who tried to capture the assassin, was also killed.
