More than 100 ancient furnaces in Bago Region should be protected, sources say.
A total of 115 furnaces from the Pyu kingdom of Sri Ksetra have been apparently left to decay in the mountains
in Pyay District.
Most of the furnaces have worn out over time and some were damaged by natural disasters, humans
and animals, according to the Department of Archaeology, National Museum and Library in Pyay.
“They are archaeologically important. I wish we could let the world know about them,” said Soe Min,
deputy director of the department.
He said the department asked the government about Ks6 million (US$4,500) as a maintenance budget
in 2016 but the request was not granted.
Aung Ngwe, resident of Paukkhaung Township, said: “Not many furnaces remain intact. We can see
them in the mountain and valley.”
It is said the furnaces were used to forge weapons and ironware.
