Yangon chief minister underscores systematic management of industrial zones

Yangon Region Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein has stressed the need to systematically manage the industrial zones where warehouses and vacant land plots are subject to market speculation as an industrial supervision committee has been formed with regional ministers.
The establishment of the supervision committee under the leadership of the ministers comes after management committees formed in respective industrial zones were found to have lacked managerial authority.
"In the industrials zones only warehouses are running and there are a lot of vacant land. As the land plots are only subject to market speculation, systematic management is necessary for those industrial zones. An industrial zone is important for the income of a country. Industrial zone management committees are formed with entrepreneurs of respective zones. They don't have much authority or power. This is why the Yangon Region government has formed an industrial supervision committee with ministers and departmental organisations. We are also conducting a study and have reached a certain level. We have studied Hlinethaya Industrial Zone. We are also studying and planning to merge the tree industrial zones in South Dagon Township. For these tasks, the powerful committee we have formed will make supervision," said Chief Minister Phyo Min Thein.
Yangon Region alone has 29 industrial zones while there are only 21 in other parts of the country.
In regions and states across Myanmar there have been 37,076 plots for industrial zones but 7,194 are still vacant. According to some data from the industrial zones in Yangon collected in November 2014 under the previous government, there were 2,339 industrial plots with 4,418 acres which include 1,299 warehouses. The then government announced that inoperative plots would be seized by February 1, 2015, but failed to take action.
On May 26, 2016 also after the new government took office, Nilar Kyaw, Yangon Region Minister for Electricity, Industry and Road Transport, said as per the order issued by the government, continued action would be taken if vacant industrial plots were not to operate within six months. However, no action could be taken though the six months passed.
