Myawaddy- At the end of 180-day grace period for undocumented migrant workers in Thailand, Myanmar migrant workers started coming back home at Myawaddy on January 8.
Among the returnees are people coming back from Malaysia as well as Thailand.
“I was detained for four months and my friend for 1 and a half month. We were detained as we have no documents. In future, it is impossible to live in Thailand if there are no documents,” said Zaw Lin from Panakyun Township, Rakhine State.
Among the workers coming back from Malaysia, what they said was they have legal documents but they were in constant fear of their lives. They were continuously threatened. Even if they were sick, they did not dare to go to medical centres.
“I went to Malaysia officially but I saw Myanmar people who were beaten and threatened their lives frequently. I came through awork agent and paid Ringgit 1,200 as agent fees. I no longer wish to stay in Malaysia, so I came back,” said a person who did not want to be named.
From June 29, 2017 to January 8 this year, a total of 55,559 people came back to Myanmar. It is expected that more people will come back soon.
