The Arakan National Party (ANP) will hold a meeting in the first week of January to discuss the 21st Century Panglong Conference and party affairs including chairman Dr Aye Maung’s recent resignation.
“We can’ give details now, but we plan to issue a statement on December 5 that will release details,” said ANP vice chairman Khaing Pyi Soe.
ANP has the largest number of seats in Rakhine State Parliament. It is one of the most powerful political parties although it has not been able to form a government.
The matter of party chairman Dr Aye Maung’s resignation letter has attracted both positive and negative comments in social media. Some have suggested that a new party could emerge.
On November 27, Aye Maung sent a letter to the party’s central executive committee asking for permission to resign as member and terminate party duties as chairman.
In the letter, Aye Maung said he tried his best in carrying out his duties as chairman of both Rakhine Nationalities Development Party (RNDP) and ANP. However, there had been discord between ANP leaders with personal attacks frequently seen both inside and outside meetings. He was especially faced with personal attacks, he said.
He, however, pledged to continue working together with his friends in efforts for Rakhine regional development even though he has resigned from the party, said the letter.
Dr Aye Maung first took chairmanship of RNDP and was elected as Upper House MP for Rakhine State Constituency (1) in the 2010 election. He then acted as chairman of ANP, which was formed after RNDP and Arkan League for Democracy were merged.
Dr Aye Maung lost to the 2015 general election, but he won a seat in the Lower House of Parliament representing Am Constituency in Rakhine State in the by-election held this year.
